a relationship with God

Why do I need a relationship with God?

Matthew 7:21–23 (HCSB): 21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven.

22 On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?’

23 Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!’

The reason why we need a relationship with God is because the the life we live as believers is more than just works. When we think of salvation we think of our faith in Jesus, that he paid our sin debt in full in order for us to be saved. But do we still think subconsciously by doing works we deserve to get in. In the passage Jesus address people like this. “On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?” Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!’ It’s about the quality not quantity. It’s about the life you live rather than the works you do. In order for us to live the life of a believer we have to have a relationship with God to guide us through the roadblocks of this world. Anyone can do the the works of God but not everyone can live the life Christ lived. God will for us is to be like the son and that will take time but out of that relationship you build with him comes works.

Building a relationship with God

To build a relationship with God takes many things like communication, trust, time, patience and many more. Sometimes we can lack the effort in our relationship with God. Our relationship mirrors a marriage and if you’re married or even in a relationship with someone you quickly realize that it takes effort to make it work. You put the effort in it not because you have to but because you want to. The difference between effort and works is the same difference between spirit and law. Living by the law is a “have to” life and living by the spirit is a “want to” life.

In this relationship with God there will be times when you will be tempted to please yourself and to live your life away from God. But when this temptation comes remember the commitment you made with Jesus.

“Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us,”

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12:1‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Look at Jesus and how he sacrificed his life to bring us closer to God. We was sinners and yet he died that we may have life. Jesus is our example of faith, love, and commitment towards our father.

“keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.”

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12:2‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Our effort in our relationship with God is a act of love towards Him who loved us first by sending his son to the cross so that we may know our father.

Devote yourselves to prayer

Devote yourselves to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving.

Colossians 4:2 HCSB

Sometimes we get too wrapped up in life when we forget to pray, give thanks or just acknowledge who He is. We lean back on our understanding instead of His. We start to take credit for things that was meant for God’s glory. This is due to lack of time spent with God. Somewhere in our walk we veered left but it’s time to get back on the road. Devote yourselves to prayer. Open that line of communication with God and restore the relationship you once had. Give God thanks and glory for being a forgiving, faithful, and awesome Father.

Knowing God

“This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent Jesus Christ.”
John 17:3 HCSB

Have you ever sat in church and heard about the love of God but it never stick? Or have you read a bible verse that don’t give you that excitement that other people get? Have you wonder why this person is so in love with Jesus? It comes down to one word “reality”. God has to become a reality to you. In order for you to experience God, you have to know that he is real. That’s what separate the religious church goers and the believers. The proof that God has been made real to you is your life. When Jesus come in your life you have to change because what he brings is truth. Will you live this life perfectly? No! But your heart will seek after God non stop and you would want to please him. To know God is to know his love. So how can God become a reality in my life? PRAY!!! One of the under utilized tools we have. Ask him (God) to reveal himself to you. To open your eyes and show you how is he working in your life. God has many ways to communicate to you like: scripture, people, situations and many more. As he revealing himself to you, build a relationship with him. The deeper your relationship is with Jesus the more real he is to you. Believe God is more eager for you to know him than your willing to ask him.

God bless everyone!
